Dr. Greg Monty

Director of Research and Development, Uunderwriter's Laboratory, Inc.

Greg Monty was raised in Rochester, NY, after his first 2 years spent along the Mississippi in Davenport, Iowa. Educational and business opportunities took Greg to West Lafayette, IN; Boston, MA; Ann Arbor, MI; Ventura, CA; Phoenix, AZ; Austin, TX; and now back to Chicago, ILÉ.the closest he has lived to his birthplace in Iowa. Greg received his Electrical Engineering degrees at Purdue (BS), and MIT (MS, and Ph.D.). He has had two professorial jobs at the University of Michigan (EE professor), and at Arizona State University (Director of Center for Solid-State Electronics Research). Professionally, Greg has always been involved in start-up activities, and has been a founder of 3 separate start-ups (2 that had IPOs). In addition to public offerings, he has started semiconductor divisions within Motorola, and has stimulated growth of research at ASU. In his present job at Underwriters Laboratories, he has started up a new business in the area of restricted substances through incubator activity in Research and Development. Greg has 5 children, a saint for a spouse, and stays fit by bicycle-commuting 17 miles each way to work virtually every day of daylight savings time.
