Mr. Art Stormer Chemistry and Physics Teacher, Benjamin Logan High School |
Art Stormer was raised in the village of Nevada, Ohio where he developed a curiosity about the natural universe and its mathematical expression. He matriculated at Case Western Reserve University planning to major in mathematics but enjoyed freshman chemistry so much that he added chemistry as well as teaching certification courses to effectively triple major. Upon completing his degree he headed to Robert Laws Secondary School in northern Malawi in southeastern Africa to teach mainly math and science under the auspices of the Mennonite Central Committee - a Christian aid and development agency. Besides teaching he was able to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and visit Victoria Falls in Zambia. Upon completion of three academic years there he returned to US to marry an Ohioan and soon left with her for Kenya where he taught at Obwolo Secondary School for three years while Mari worked as a nurse in a local clinic until Ellen was born. Upon return to Ohio (via a ten day visit to Israel) Art entered graduate school in chemistry at Miami University where he completed his master's thesis on "The Photo-Kolbe Decarboxylation of Acetic Acids" in 1986 and received the Outstanding Chemistry Teaching Assistant Award. Since then he has taught math, chemistry, computer science, physics, astronomy, and/or physical science at Benjamin Logan High School in rural west central Ohio. He is assists with the Ohio Academy of Science's Science Fair competitions, coaches the JETS TEAMS team, and advises the chess club. Art enjoys his wife and three children, astronomy, running, disc golf, and ultimate Frisbee. Additionally, he plays the following instruments: guitar, trumpet, piano, harmonica,and flute. | |
