2009 National Youth Science Camp


International Students sponsored by the U.S. Department of State

The National Youth Science Foundation is pleased to announce that the United States Department of State will sponsor 26 delegates to the 2009 National Youth Science Camp.

Participating countries:

SUMMARY: With FY 09 grant assistance from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and WHA/PDA, the National Youth Science Foundation has invited eight countries to participate in the 2009 National Youth Science Camp, July 1-25, 2009. The Camp, now in its fourth decade, is an honors program sponsored by the State of West Virginia, individuals, and corporations who believe it is important to encourage talented and gifted science-inclined students to achieve their full potential. Students from participating WHA countries will join 100 students from across the U.S. Students will arrive in Charleston, West Virginia, on Wednesday, July 1, and depart on Saturday, July 25. Students participate in the program free of charge, round trip transportation from a major airport included.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The National Youth Science Camp is an intense residential science education program for young scientists between 16 and 18 years of age during the summer after they graduate from high school (this requirement is waived for WHA participants). In a rustic setting, students from around the country are challenged academically in exciting lectures and hands-on studies, and have many opportunities to push themselves physically in an extensive outdoor program, gain a new and deep appreciation for the great outdoors, and establish friendships that last a lifetime.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

(a) High school students aged 16-18 ;
(b) Available to participate in the entire camp;
(c) Proficient English-language skills;
(d) Intending to pursue a profession oriented toward science, mathematics, engineering or medicine;
(e) Must demonstrate leadership abilities and social maturity through involvement in both school and community activities;
(f) Must demonstrate skills and achievements outside the realm of science and outside the realm of academic pursuits; and
(g) Must demonstrate curiosity and eagerness to explore many and varied topics.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Close of Business (COB), Friday, May 1, 2009

COST AND FUNDING: No cost to participating students. Countries with two students: All costs will be covered by the Camp through the ECA grant. Countries with four students: Costs for two students will be covered by the Camp through the ECA grant. Costs for the additional two students will be covered by WHA/PDA.

VISAS: All participants will travel under J-1 visas. ECA will prepare the DS-2019 forms and forward to Embassies.
